Real Estate Roundup II: Historic Homes for Sale across Kentucky

What’s the best thing for historic houses? To be a home, to be occupied, to be a place of life and energy. For that to happen, houses that may need a little love and affection must be purchased by someone who loves old houses. Here are some listings for historic houses for under $100,000 that I found on Zillow.

All of the photographs are culled from Zillow or Google streetview. I don’t know anything about these houses personally, nor am I selling them, but I do spend a lot of time trying to find historic houses that retain some of their original fabric. The link to each listing is in the heading, and is also included after the description.

Historic front gable house, 151 N. Jessup Avenue, Hopkinsville, Kentucky – $20,000.00

Façade.

This 1,900 square foot house makes me wish for a magic carpet – so I could fly to Hopkinsville & figure out the origins of this fascinating building. The brick, front gable house looks like the gable end of a house oriented another direction that the current one- which may well be the explanation for its curious appearance. The house has segmental arched windows and some nice late 19th century interior details.

Rural property, 10156 Morehead Rd, Wallingford, Kentucky – $48,000.00

Façade.

I must admit I love this one because of all of the outbuildings. If you wanted a quiet rural escape with room to putter and lots of fun outbuildings for your hobbies – this might be it! Keeping chickens, growing a big garden, sitting quietly on the porch and watching the world pass by…The house needs some work, but that could be part of a “hobby” too.

T-plan Cottage, 1208 W 3rd St, Owensboro, Kentucky  –   $84,900.00

Façade of cottage.

A T-plan cottage like this one – built around the turn of the 20th century – often boasts more room on the interior than one would guess. This 1.5-story  frame house rests on a brick foundation and despite an application of vinyl siding,  the house retains the original shingles in the gable and the lovely, large façade window. The house is just shy of 1,400 square feet with 11 foot ceilings – and I bet there are hardwood floors underneath all that carpet.

Central Passage House, 305 Tutt Street, Columbia, Adair County, Kentucky – $65,000.00

This house also retains its original wood, 2/2 double-hung sash windows.

This two-story frame house is a typical Kentucky form, from 1850 to the turn of the century. A central hallway is flanked by a room to either side, with interior chimneys on either side of the central passage. The chimneys are still intact, though it looks as though the fireplaces have been covered up. This one definitely needs some work to reclaim its historic details, but at almost 2,000 square feet and a large lot, it’s a steal if you’re looking for quiet, small town life.

Newport Townhouse, 910 Putnam St, Newport, Kentucky – $59,900.00

Façade.

Holy hoodmolds! This tiny brick treasure is a shell inside, but a beauty on the exterior, with a beautiful cornice and hoodmolds. The house is around 14,00 square feet, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. It has a new roof, but needs an entire new interior.

Historic Shotgun House, 2509 W Jefferson Street, Louisville, Kentucky– $24,400

Façade of the brick shotgun house at 2509 W. Jefferson Street.

Louisville has an amazing collection of historic shotgun houses – some estimates put the number above that of New Orleans. The doorway and windows on the façade of this single brick shotgun have been resized, but the original hoodmolds and door surround are extant.  The house has 1,359 square feet and a hipped roof – plus a small setback perfect for a garden!

T-plan House,  116 S Harrison Street, Lebanon, Kentucky – $99,900.00

Façade of 116 South Harrison Street.

This 2.5 story frame T-plan is currently divided into three apartments, but it looks like it would be a great single family home.  The house has 2,400 square feet, a detached garage, and lots of potential – just look past the dirty siding and chipped paint  – it could be lovely.

Cottage with Wrap-Around Porch, 800 Olive Street, Murray, Kentucky – $79,900.00

Façade of 800 Olive Street.

Oh, this house is dream-worthy! That porch, the roofline, and the bay windows alone! According to the listing, “the demolition has been completed and the home is ready for completion.” The circa 1915 house is on a corner lot in downtown Murray, and although the interior has been ripped out to the studs, the original hardwood floors are intact. There are five fireplaces – but no plumbing, wiring, or HVAC. Murray is a college town, and close to lots of great natural resources (Land Between the Lakes) and two hours from Nashville, TN.

I know there are some folks out there that could give these historic treasures a new life!
