Tell Your Story with StoryCorps: March 16-April 14, 2017

StoryCorps is coming back to town! The nonprofit organization that helps people record stories about their lives and “leave a legacy for the future” will return to Lexington, Kentucky on March 16, parking their  MobileBooth — a sleek Airstream trailer  converted to a recording studio — at Phoenix Park next to the downtown library.

I visited the MobileBooth in 2011, during StoryCorps’ last trip to Lexington. Both of my parents agreed to let me interview them for a 40-minute recording session. While we had no trouble filling up that time, a trained StoryCorps facilitator is present to guide you through the interview process.

I am so thankful for the storytellers that came before me.

I am lucky that my family believes in the power of stories – though I will admit that my father’s penchant for tall tales sometimes caused me a great deal of grief growing up. As a professional, oral history informs so much of my research, and makes my experiences with Kentucky’s historic resources so much richer.

So I urge everyone, if possible, to take advantage of this opportunity. StoryCorps will be in Lexington until April 14, 2017. Reservations to record your story can be made by calling StoryCorps’ 24-hour toll-free reservation line at 1-800-850-4406 or visiting www.storycorps.org .
